Effective Cueing
Some general principles can be used to make the yoga poses more effective together.
Always start a yoga class by warming up muscles. Getting out of a pose is as important as getting into the pose. Safety and comfort comes first. When cuing, getting out of a reclined pose, cue to roll to one side first, and then to rise up. When cuing coming up out of a standing pose, cue to press firm with legs. When cuing coming out of a standing forward fold pose, cue to lift the full body first and to lift the head last.
How to keep it simple.
Remind yoga students that yoga practice has to be steady and comfortable. Always begin with the basics, and always be a simple yoga instructor, and use a simple everyday language while cuing going in and coming out of yoga poses. Always remember to repeat the same pose on each side of the body. And most importantly yoga practice should feel good.
How to give clear instruction.
Introduce the pose first, explain how to get into the pose, and then how to come out of the pose.Explain modifications and the importance of the proper breathing. Keep reminding the students to observe their body and to listen to their body and to pay attention of how their body is feeling.Always focus on simplicity of instructions.
Why teach in English then communicate in Sanskrit.
It's important to use the language that everyone in yoga class understands. Technical terminology is always intimidating and it could cause injury for a student who does not understand a meaning of a pose. Cuing yoga poses needs to be communicated clearly and in a simple choice of words.
Amplify your voice in a calm way.
Sometimes it is beneficial to raise the voice as a yoga instructor, especially when practicing breathing. Also when explain the benefits and contraindications of a pose.
