Adjusting the Student

According to Patanjali, the practice of yoga needs to be steady and comfortable.

Yoga instructor needs to be an observer.

Yoga instructor needs to remember to always start with the basics.

The simplicity of instructions and simplicity of guiding students to confidence in their yoga practice,

especially the students who are less flexible - will create a feeling of confidence for the students.

While attempting to adjust a student, it is important not to take the feeling of confidence away from the student, and therefore it is important to explain to the student where she or he is right now in the pose. It is important to ask the student to mentally observe how her or his body feels in the pose, and teach the student to allow this awareness to flow through her or his entire body. Teach the student how to give herself or himself full attention in a pose, then and only then ask the student to adjust the pose with confidence.

It is also important to explain to the student the energy flow created in a pose, and what role the proper alignment plays in the energy flow.

If you feel that you need to physically adjust the student - ask if it's ok to touch the student first.

Benefits of hands-on.

Help the student to achieve a correct alignment which will help the energy flow in the student's body, which will result in the proper benefit from the pose.

Remember,

there is always a replacement pose for the student who cannot fully express a pose.

Downsides of hands-on.

The hands-on method could take away a student's confidence.

It could make a student start comparing herself or himself to other students which could most likely result in giving up on yoga practice and losing the student as a client.
